Launch-patch starter build

Withered Knight Starter Build

This current-patch starter build helps you choose Greatsword or Polearm & Shield, identify confirmed skill and talent directions, understand recent patch changes, and decide what to test first.

Quick answer

Use Greatsword while learning Withered Knight. It is the more offensive branch and asks less precision than Polearm & Shield. Move to Polearm & Shield when you want longer reach, block-protected counters, formation disruption, and stronger trio utility. For that branch, choose Quick Shield Bash for aggression or Enhanced Shield Bash for protection.

Scope of this starter build

This page provides a patch-aware starting framework, not a fully tested gear-and-gem loadout. Exact gear, gem affixes, damage values, and a fixed rotation remain unverified for the current version.

Greatsword start

A patch-aware starting framework

The official notes confirm the following tools and recent changes. This is a selection framework rather than a locked gear-and-gem recipe.

  1. Take a gap-control tool. Thorn Guide pulls targets back into your pressure; Breakthrough Charge helps close or reshape distance.
  2. Keep Parry available while learning matchups. The pre-launch update moved it earlier and extended its counter window, making it a natural defensive answer to predictable aggression.
  3. Build around the Wither/Execute core. Maintain pressure long enough for the class mechanic to matter instead of spending every skill immediately.
  4. Use gear to support the chosen job. Favor survival and reliable pressure before chasing an unverified “best-in-slot” list; exact affix values still need in-game testing.
Community starting point

Current player discussions frequently combine Parry with Thorn Guide or Breakthrough Charge and then choose between sustained Wither marks and a more explosive Wither path. Treat this as a testable starting point, not a confirmed best build.

Polearm & Shield start

Choose one of two official talent directions

Offensive path

Quick Shield Bash

Raises shield-charge efficiency and supports consecutive dashes. Use it to break a formation, reach the backline, or keep an opponent from resetting.

Defensive path

Enhanced Shield Bash

Empowers a charged heavy strike with AoE knockback. Use it to peel pressure from allies and create a stable counter window.

Common mistakes

What usually breaks the build

  1. Choosing Polearm only because it has a shield. The developers explicitly describe a steeper learning curve built around aim, timing, and prediction.
  2. Using every gap closer at once. Keep one answer for an opponent who disengages, heals, or punishes the first approach.
  3. Treating solo and trio as the same build. Enhanced Shield Bash and remote teammate rescue gain value in coordinated play; solo needs more self-contained pressure.
  4. Copying beta numbers. Polearm & Shield changed immediately after launch, and future patches can invalidate exact stat priorities.
